Nottingham Hawaiian restaurant wins Midlands Enterprise Award

Pokéwaves – Nottingham’s first Hawaiian poké bar – has been named Nottinghamshire’s Best Takeaway Restaurant on behalf of SME News, hosts of the Midlands Enterprise Awards.

Established in 2019 by two Nottingham university alumni and voted Nottingham’s favourite takeaway in the latest Deliveroo 2021 report, Pokéwaves specialises in rapidly serving up healthy, fresh Hawaiian oceanic cuisine bowls, as well as fruit smoothie bowls. A classic poké bowl is served with sticky rice or noodles and power-packed pickles, vegetables and salad.

The restaurant, located in Nottingham’s intu Victoria Centre, gets its name (pronounced poke-ay waves) from the preparation of the food itself. Poké in Hawaiian means “to slice or cut” and was invented by fishermen who would season the cut-offs from their daily catch (Pohkay) whilst sat on their boats and eat it raw.

Whilst Poké bowls typically comprise of raw marinated fish, tofu and meat options are also available.

The “design your own bowl” is Pokéwaves’ best-selling product through delivery platform, Deliveroo, and the yuzu salmon dish is also a Pokéwaves favourite.

The Midlands Enterprise Awards is open to any Midlands-based business identifying as a small to medium-sized enterprise and aims to highlight and give recognition to what it describes as the ‘crème de la crème’ of business throughout the Midlands. Final judgements from the awards’ research team are based on a range of criteria including business growth and performance, innovation, customer feedback and client dedication. The award also symbolises the effort that institutions across the Midlands have applied in the face of challenges posed by a global pandemic.

As a winner of the awards, Pokéwaves will be entered into the online A-Z winners’ directory, will be published online and on the SME News website, and will receive exposure in SME News magazine, circulating to over 78,000 people.

In 2020, Pokéwaves was also crowned a winner at the Good Food Awards in Nottingham.

“We are so proud of how the business has come through this last year,” says co-owner Kent Hau. “Kelvin and I – my partner in crime – knew it would be difficult to keep going and we can’t believe the trials that our industry has faced amidst the pandemic. But now that we’re here and we’ve proved to ourselves that we can come out the other side of something like this, we are so grateful that all of the hard work has paid off.

“Our amazing team here at Pokéwaves have not stopped and we’re so taken aback by the response from consumers to our food. Our mission is to enrich people in the best possible way – feeding their minds, their bodies, their souls. So by receiving this award, it’s like recognition that our mission is a success which is so fantastic.

“We are very excited for the future and to continue serving our customers naturally-sourced, healthy, authentic food with a unique history. Here’s to 2022!”
